About AIR files

The .air file extension is most famously known as an Adobe AIR Installation Package. It uses standard ZIP compression to bundle web technologies (HTML, JavaScript, Flash) into standalone desktop applications. Secondary uses include character animation data for the 2D fighting engine M.U.G.E.N (developed by Elecbyte) and aircraft flight dynamics data in Microsoft Flight Simulator.

Historically, to open or install an Adobe AIR package, you needed the Adobe AIR Runtime. M.U.G.E.N files require tools like Fighter Factory.

There are severe disadvantages to using the .air format today. Adobe officially discontinued support for Adobe AIR in 2020, transitioning management to Harman. This makes legacy .air installers risky and difficult to run on modern operating systems like Windows 11 or macOS without hunting down outdated and potentially insecure runtimes. Furthermore, as an installation package, you cannot directly edit the code inside without unpacking it first. M.U.G.E.N files are obscure and restricted strictly to custom fighting game logic.

Because an Adobe .air file is just a compressed archive, the most pragmatic solution for web or editing purposes is to extract it to access the underlying html, js, and swf files. For web archiving, extracting the contents to ZIP is the only reliable path forward. M.U.G.E.N .air files are plain text, which can easily be converted to TXT or JSON for editing.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AIR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted SFF, ACT, ARI, CNS, AI, CMD, AIT, JPG, ZIP, EXE, CFG, MSO and TXT files.
