About ARI files
The .ARI file extension primarily represents an ARRIRAW image, a digital cinema format developed by ARRI to capture uncompressed or losslessly compressed sensor data from cameras like the ALEXA and D-21. While these files offer immense latitude for color grading and visual effects in high-end production pipelines, they are notoriously difficult to manage in casual workflows. A single .ARI file often represents just one frame of a video sequence, meaning a few seconds of footage can consist of hundreds of distinct files, rapidly consuming gigabytes of storage.
Furthermore, .ARI files are raw sensor dumps (Bayer pattern data) that require "debayering" to be viewable as a normal image. Without specialized software like DaVinci Resolve or the ARRI Reference Tool, standard operating systems cannot preview them. They also typically appear "flat" or washed out until a Look-Up Table (LUT) is applied. For general viewing, sharing, or editing on non-workstation PCs, users must convert these massive raw sequences into manageable container formats. For video editing, convert sequences to MOV (ProRes) or MXF (DNxHR). For static previews or web use, converting individual frames to JPG or PNG is the pragmatic solution.
*Note: In rare academic contexts, an .ARI file may be source code for the ARIBAS interpreter, used in number theory. These are simple text files and should be opened with a text editor.*
Convert.Guru analyzes your ARI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

The ARI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ARI converter.
