About SWF files
The .SWF file (Shockwave Flash or Small Web Format) is a compiled multimedia container originally used to deliver vector graphics, text, video, and audio over the internet. It was the industry standard format for web games, interactive applications, and animations, primarily managed by Adobe Flash Player and authored in Adobe Animate. Today, the .SWF format is completely obsolete. Adobe officially discontinued Flash Player on December 31, 2020. Modern web browsers explicitly block .SWF files due to critical security vulnerabilities. Opening them natively is impossible without risky, outdated software or third-party emulators like Ruffle. Additionally, because .SWF is a compiled binary, extracting the original assets - such as vector shapes, audio tracks, or ActionScript code - is extremely difficult without specialized decompilers. To view or preserve this content, you must convert it to modern formats. For standard playback of animations, convert to MP4 or WEBM. For short looping visuals, convert to GIF. Keep in mind that converting a .SWF to a video format strips away all interactivity, meaning clickable menus and game mechanics will be lost. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing risky software.

The SWF Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SWF converter.
