.AFPUB files are proprietary page layout documents created by Affinity Publisher, a desktop publishing application developed by Serif. These files store complex publication data, including master pages, text frames, linked or embedded raster images, typography settings, and vector graphics used for print or digital media.
The primary disadvantage of the .AFPUB format is its strict vendor lock-in. It is a closed, proprietary format that requires the Affinity software suite to open or edit natively. Users cannot open .AFPUB files in industry-standard tools like Adobe InDesign or standard web browsers. If you send an .AFPUB file to a client, copywriter, or printer who does not own the software, they will be completely unable to view or interact with the document.
Because of these severe sharing limitations, you must convert .AFPUB files to universal formats like PDF for print production, client review, or archiving. Exporting to EPS, SVG, or JPG is also standard practice for rendering individual page proofs. When converting to these standard formats, native structural features like live text flow between frames, master page hierarchies, and non-destructive formatting are permanently flattened or lost.
