Convert AF to another file type

To convert AF animations to another format, you need Ansys Fluent or other 3D software.

Convert a file to AF

To convert other file formats to the "Animation Data File" file type, you need software like Ansys Fluent or a similar tool.

About AF files

The .af file extension primarily represents an Ansys Fluent Animation file. It is used by Ansys Fluent, a leading Computational Fluid Dynamics (CFD) software, to store complex 3D simulation sequences. Secondary uses include proprietary 3D game animation files for Bethesda Game Studios titles and RQAF data containers for the game Amazing Frog? by Fayju.

Sharing .af files presents a massive bottleneck. They are proprietary and heavily locked into their native ecosystems. To view an engineering .af file, the recipient typically requires an expensive, active Ansys subscription. The files are not supported by web browsers, standard media players, or basic operating system viewers. The mathematical nature of the data means these files often exceed gigabytes in size, containing dense 3D mesh and fluid flow calculations rather than standard pixel-based video.

To make this data accessible, users must convert .af animations into standard video formats like MP4, AVI, or MOV. Doing so flattens the 3D data into a widely viewable 2D video, though you will lose the ability to rotate the 3D model or query specific fluid dynamic values.

Because .af files store mathematical simulation states instead of standard media tracks, this file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert externally. Standard online video converters will fail to process it. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. However, many .af files are secretly structured as GZIP archives or SQLite databases. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your AF file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted AFDESIGN, AFPHOTO, AFPUB, JPG, TSX, INDD, IDML, XAPK, ANYDESK, DMG, TORRENT, CRDOWNLOAD and EX4 files.

The AF Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our AF converter.
