Convert 3DX to another file type

To convert 3DX 3D models to another format, you need Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE or other 3D software.

Convert a file to 3DX

To convert other file formats to the "3D XML Model File" file type, you need software like Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE or a similar tool.

About 3DX files

The .3DX file format is primarily used by Dassault Systèmes as a 3D XML model or assembly file for their 3DEXPERIENCE platform and CATIA software. These files store lightweight representations of 3D CAD models, allowing product lifecycle management (PLM) systems to display assemblies without loading massive source files. They are essentially ZIP archives containing XML metadata and binary geometric data. Occasionally, they are also associated with legacy Rhino 3D models. The main disadvantage of the .3DX format is its proprietary nature. It is extremely difficult to open outside the Dassault ecosystem and requires expensive enterprise CAD licenses to view or edit properly. Because it is highly compressed and tailored for specific PLM workflows, it is not supported by standard web browsers or common consumer 3D software. Standard online converters almost always fail to process it because it lacks open specifications and contains complex multi-part assembly links. You typically need to convert .3DX files to universal formats like STEP, IGES, or STL for sharing with external vendors, CAM workflows, or 3D printing. Be aware that converting from a lightweight 3D XML format to a solid model format might result in the loss of parametric history, metadata, or high-resolution surface data. Just drag and drop your file into convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Because .3DX files are often just ZIP containers, our system can inspect the file, extract the internal XML structure, and show text or internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying geometry format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your 3DX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted WORLD, DX, JPG, MAX, 3DM, WS3 and 3DC files.

FAQ

If you want to convert 3DX file to OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL, PLY or WRL, you can use Dassault Systèmes 3DEXPERIENCE or similar software from the "3D CAD Data Exchange" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The 3DX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our 3DX converter.
