Extract text from 3DX files
To convert your 3DX file to another format, you need 3DEXPERIENCE or other 3D software.
To convert other file formats to the "CAD Exchange Format" file type, you need software like 3DEXPERIENCE or a similar tool.
The .3DX file extension is primarily a proprietary 3D model format associated with Dassault Systèmes and their 3DEXPERIENCE platform. Internally, these files are often ZIP-compressed containers (similar to the more common 3DXML format) holding XML manifests and binary geometric data. They are designed for rich data exchange within the Dassault ecosystem, including CATIA and SolidWorks.
For most users, receiving a .3DX file creates immediate friction: it cannot be opened by standard image viewers, web browsers, or even most competing CAD software like AutoCAD without expensive plugins or licenses. The format is heavily optimized for the 3DEXPERIENCE platform, meaning data is often locked away in a proprietary structure that hinders collaboration outside the Dassault environment. Additionally, a small percentage of legacy .3DX files may be ancient 3D models from early versions of Rhino (Robert McNeel & Associates), adding further confusion.
To make these files usable, the best workflow is converting them to universally accepted formats. for engineering and manufacturing, convert to STEP (STP) or IGES to preserve geometric precision. For 3D printing, STL is the standard target. For web visualization, marketing, or use in Blender, converting to OBJ or GLB (glTF) is recommended to reduce file size and ensure compatibility.
