About DX files
The .DX file extension most frequently represents the JCAMP-DX standard, a file format established by IUPAC for the exchange of chemical spectroscopy data (such as IR, NMR, and Mass Spectrometry). These files are typically ASCII text-based, containing spectral metadata and coordinate tables. However, .DX is also used for legacy Fujitsu SceneWalker 3D scenes, Agilent chromatography data, and occasionally DICOM digital x-ray images.
While JCAMP-DX files are human-readable text, raw .DX files present significant challenges for researchers and students. They often require specialized, expensive instrument software from vendors like Agilent Technologies or Nanalysis to visualize the spectrum correctly. Opening them in standard text editors reveals a wall of unformatted numbers, making manual analysis impossible. Furthermore, compatibility issues arise when trying to import these files into general-purpose tools like Microsoft Excel or modern 3D editors like Blender (for the 3D variants).
To overcome these hurdles, the recommended workflow depends on the file's origin. For scientific data, converting .DX to CSV or XLSX is essential for numerical analysis in spreadsheets. To include the spectral graph in research papers or reports, converting to PDF or vector formats like SVG ensures high-quality scaling. For legacy 3D .DX files, converting to OBJ or GLB allows for use in modern rendering pipelines.
Convert.Guru analyzes your DX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert DX file to FX, OBJ, FBX, DAE, 3DS, MAX, BLEND, MA, MB, C4D, STL or PLY, you can use Nanalysis NMReady or similar software from the "Chemical Spectroscopy Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, DAE, X3D, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP, 3DS, 3DM, OBJ, STEP or FBX files to DX, try Nanalysis NMReady or another comparable tool in the "Chemical Spectroscopy Data" category.
The DX Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DX converter.
