About ZED files

The .ZED file extension primarily represents an encrypted file container created by Zed!, a security software suite developed by the Thales Group. It relies on the Microsoft Compound file format structure to securely store files and folders using password protection or certificate-based encryption. Alternatively, a .ZED file can be a compressed family tree project created by MyHeritage Family Tree Builder. In this genealogy context, it functions as a standard ZIP archive containing a GEDCOM file and related media assets.

The main disadvantage of encrypted .ZED files is that they are entirely inaccessible without the correct passphrase or decryption key. They are proprietary and require a specific licensed application to open. For the genealogy variant, the file is not natively recognized by generic archive managers unless manually renamed, which frustrates users trying to access their family data without installing MyHeritage software.

If dealing with a genealogy .ZED file, the best conversion target is a standard ZIP archive or extracting the internal GEDCOM data file for broad compatibility with other family history software like Ancestry or RootsMagic. Encrypted files cannot be converted directly without decryption first, as the data is mathematically obfuscated.

Because of their proprietary or encrypted nature, standard online converters usually fail to process .ZED files. Even if the file is an encrypted container, our analysis can inspect the internal Microsoft Compound headers to verify its integrity. If it is a Family Tree Builder archive, we can detect the underlying ZIP format, allowing you to extract the embedded GEDCOM file easily.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ZED file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ZEDX, PDF, ZIP, JPG, P7M, EZD, F3D, PAC, KTX and ODM files.

The ZED Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ZED converter.
