About P7M files

A .P7M file is a digitally signed or encrypted data container that uses the PKCS #7 (Public-Key Cryptography Standards) format. These files are almost exclusively encountered as smime.p7m email attachments. They are generated by email clients supporting the S/MIME standard, such as Microsoft Outlook or Mozilla Thunderbird, to verify the sender's identity or protect the message contents from interception.

The primary disadvantage of the .P7M format is its lack of universal compatibility. Standard webmail interfaces like Gmail, Yahoo, and default mobile mail apps often cannot parse S/MIME natively. When a sender transmits a signed message, the recipient is left staring at a confusing smime.p7m attachment instead of the actual email body or embedded attachments. Opening it locally usually requires installing dedicated cryptographic software or importing personal certificates, which is a massive bottleneck for average users.

To bypass these frustrating limitations, you can extract the underlying payload. Drop your file here to view and convert it securely right in your browser. If the .P7M is strictly digitally signed (and not encrypted), we can strip the signature layer. For archiving and reading, convert the file to a standard PDF or TXT. To retain the email structure for viewing in any desktop client, convert it to EML. Keep in mind that if the file is strictly encrypted (not just signed), you will inherently need your private key installed on a local machine to decrypt it.

Convert.Guru analyzes your P7M file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted P7S, MIME, PDF, P7, REL, ZIP, XML, JPG, XBRL, CXF, P7B, ADF and P7C files.

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our P7M converter.
