About PAC files
The .PAC file extension represents a complex challenge because it serves three distinct, incompatible purposes across different industries. Most frequently, it is a Game Asset Archive used by developers like Sega, Yuke's, and Nintendo for titles such as WWE 2K, Sonic the Hedgehog, and Super Smash Bros. These files act as proprietary containers (similar to ZIP) storing 3D models, textures, and audio. The primary constraint is their strict proprietary lock-in; standard extraction tools cannot open them, and they often require game-specific decryptors (like PAC Editor or Hedgehog Engine tools) to access the content. Users typically need to convert these archives into accessible folders or standard formats to mod games or view assets.
Alternatively, a .PAC file may be a Proxy Auto-Config script, originally developed by Netscape. These are essentially JavaScript text files used by web browsers to automatically choose a proxy server. While effective for network administration, they are not directly executable by users and are often mistaken for binary files. Converting these to TXT or JS allows administrators to audit and edit the routing logic.
Finally, in the broadcast industry, .PAC refers to subtitle files created by Screen Systems. These binary subtitle files are the standard for high-end broadcasting but are completely incompatible with consumer media players like VLC Media Player or web platforms. To make these subtitles usable for streaming or personal archiving, it is essential to convert them to text-based formats like SRT or VTT. convert.guru simplifies this process: drag and drop your file to identify its type and convert it to the format you need - whether that's extracting game assets, decoding subtitles, or viewing network scripts.

The PAC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PAC converter.
