About KTX files

A .KTX file is a container format specifically designed to store textures for 3D graphics applications. It is predominantly developed and maintained by The Khronos Group to streamline texture loading in OpenGL and Vulkan applications. A secondary variant exists within the Apple ecosystem, functioning as an Apple texture container file utilized by macOS and iOS systems, notably alongside the Apple Photos application.

The primary disadvantage of the .KTX format is its highly specialized, developer-centric nature. Standard image viewers, default operating system tools, and web browsers cannot open these files natively. Because .KTX files often house GPU-compressed texture data (such as ASTC, ETC2, or BCn) along with 3D-specific metadata like mipmaps or cubemaps, they are exceptionally frustrating for non-developers to view, share, or edit.

To make these files accessible, conversion is usually necessary. Drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it securely right in your browser. For standard web use and quick sharing, convert to WebP or PNG. For general photo management or archiving, convert to JPG. Note that converting a 3D texture container to a standard 2D image format will extract the base visual layer but discard 3D-specific data like mipmap levels.

Convert.Guru analyzes your KTX file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted KTX2, PNG, JPG, DDS, PVR, KFX, EXR, TGA, ATLAS, GRAPHML, CAR, PKM and PDF files.

The KTX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KTX converter.
