About Z3D files
The .Z3D file extension is most prominently associated with ZModeler (Zanoza Modeler), a 3D modeling application widely used in the video game modding community for titles like Grand Theft Auto and Need for Speed. These files function as proprietary project containers, storing wireframe meshes, materials, textures, and object hierarchies specific to the ZModeler workspace.
Because .Z3D is a native development format, it presents significant barriers for interoperability. It cannot be directly opened by industry-standard tools like Blender or Autodesk Maya without prior conversion, and different versions of ZModeler (v2 vs. v3) often exhibit backward compatibility issues. To use these models in game engines, 3D printing, or other design software, users must convert them to universally accepted exchange formats. For general 3D editing and rendering, converting to OBJ or FBX is recommended as these formats preserve geometry and UV mapping. For 3D printing applications, converting to STL is the standard.
Less frequently, a .Z3D file may be a Ray Database file generated by Zemax OpticStudio for optical design, or a materials testing file from ZwickRoell software. Users should check the file origin if they are not involved in game modding.
Convert.Guru analyzes your Z3D file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted ZF3D, YFT, RAR, OBJ, ZIP, 3D, WFT, SCS, FBX, ZMD, YTD, PNG and DFF files.
The Z3D Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our Z3D converter.
