Extract text from ZModeler 3D models (Z3D)
To convert Z3D 3D models to another format, you need ZModeler or other 3D software.
To convert other file formats to the "3D Modding Project File" file type, you need software like ZModeler or a similar tool.
A .Z3D file is a 3D model project file primarily created by ZModeler (Zanoza Modeler). This software is heavily utilized in the video game modding community, specifically for editing and creating custom vehicle models in games like Grand Theft Auto, Euro Truck Simulator, and Need for Speed. In rare professional cases, a .Z3D file can also be a 3D optical design file from Zemax OpticStudio or a materials testing project from ZwickRoell testXpert.
The primary disadvantage of the .Z3D format is that it is a highly proprietary, application-specific workspace file. It is not supported by standard industry 3D suites like Blender, Autodesk Maya, or Cinema 4D. Furthermore, older .Z3D files created in ZModeler 1 or 2 often face compatibility and rendering issues when opened in the newer ZModeler 3. This severe vendor lock-in means you cannot easily share the raw 3D mesh, UV maps, or rigging data with other designers, nor can you use the file natively on the web.
To make the 3D data usable outside of the ZModeler ecosystem, you must convert it. For broad compatibility across 3D editing software, convert to OBJ or FBX. If you intend to 3D print the custom geometry, convert to STL. For modern web-based AR and interactive 3D viewers, GLTF or GLB are the best targets. Note that exporting from a proprietary project file might result in the loss of specific game-engine rigging or custom material shaders.
