About ZMD files

The .zmd extension is most frequently associated with the BlueZone Display Profile, a configuration file used by Rocket BlueZone (formerly by Seagull Software) for mainframe terminal emulation. These files store critical session connectivity parameters, such as host IP addresses, TCP ports, LU (Logical Unit) names, and keyboard mappings for 3270 or 5250 sessions.

A major limitation for users is the proprietary nature of the BlueZone ZMD format. IT administrators often need to audit these configurations or migrate settings to other emulators (like IBM Personal Communications or Putty), but the file is not designed to be human-readable outside the BlueZone interface. To inspect the contents without the software, converting or viewing the file as plain TXT is often the only way to parse the raw configuration data.

Secondary uses include compressed ROM images for Sega Genesis emulators (like Gens/GS) and 3D model assets from the game Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX. For the Sega variant, the file is essentially a compressed container that users need to decompress into standard MD or BIN files to ensure compatibility with modern emulators like RetroArch. For the 3D model variant, modders often seek to convert the proprietary geometry into universal formats like OBJ or FBX for editing in tools like Blender.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ZMD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ZMDOWNLOAD, Z3D, PDF, ZIP, CNS, SEB and SVB files.

The ZMD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ZMD converter.
