About ZMD files

.ZMD files primarily store mainframe display session profiles for Rocket BlueZone, a terminal emulator used to connect to legacy IBM mainframes. These files contain critical configuration data, server network addresses, and display preferences required for enterprise system access. A smaller percentage of .ZMD files function as compressed Sega Genesis (Mega Drive) ROM images played via the Gens/GS emulator, or as proprietary 3D model assets in legacy video games like Dave Mirra Freestyle BMX.

The main disadvantage of the .ZMD format is its highly fragmented and proprietary nature. Because multiple unrelated programs use the exact same file extension, standard operating systems fail to recognize what the file actually is. Furthermore, these files are closed-source and cannot be opened by standard text editors or web browsers. Rocket BlueZone profiles require an active enterprise license to utilize, while the ROM and 3D model variants are locked to obsolete, niche software.

Converting a .ZMD file heavily depends on its internal structure. If it is a compressed Sega ROM, the ideal conversion targets are uncompressed BIN or SMD files for broader emulator compatibility. Terminal emulator profiles generally cannot be converted to documents like PDF or DOCX because they hold raw application settings, not printable document data.

These files are notoriously difficult to process because only the original software can correctly parse the binary data or specific application formatting. Standard online converters will usually fail to process them. Our tool inspects the raw file signature to determine if it is a terminal profile, an archive, or a 3D model.

Convert.Guru analyzes your ZMD file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted ZMDOWNLOAD, Z3D, PDF, ZIP, CNS, SEB and SVB files.

The ZMD Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ZMD converter.
