Extract text from project or plugin files (XPL)
To convert XPL files to another format, you need X-Plane or other Plugin software.
To convert other file formats to the "Flight Simulator Plugin" file type, you need software like X-Plane or a similar tool.
An .XPL file is most commonly an X-Plane flight simulator plugin developed by Laminar Research. It can also be an interactive whiteboard project created with Explain Everything, or an audio preset for Akai music software.
When used in X-Plane, these files contain compiled executable code. Depending on your operating system, an .XPL file is essentially a renamed DLL (Windows), SO (Linux), or DYLIB (macOS) file. For Explain Everything, the file acts as a complex archive containing proprietary PLIST data, embedded images, and audio.
Users often try to convert .XPL files because they cannot open them by double-clicking. The major disadvantage of X-Plane plugins is their strict hardware and OS dependence - a Windows plugin will absolutely not run on a Mac. Furthermore, Explain Everything projects require the proprietary app or a paid subscription to view, making it very frustrating to share lessons with students or clients.
If you have a whiteboard project, the best conversion targets are standard PDF documents or MP4 video files. This ensures anyone can view the content on any device without paying for software. However, you cannot directly "convert" an X-Plane plugin into a document, because it consists of raw machine code.
This file format is extremely difficult to handle because it usually contains closed, proprietary, or compiled binary data. Standard online converters fail completely because they do not understand the underlying executable or compressed structure.
