About X files
The .x file extension represents a DirectX 3D Model, a legacy format introduced by Microsoft for use with the DirectX Software Development Kit (SDK). These files were the standard for storing 3D meshes, textures, animations, and frame hierarchies in early Windows game development.
While historically significant, the .x format poses major workflow challenges today. It is effectively deprecated; modern game engines like Unity and Unreal Engine prioritize formats like FBX or GLTF. Furthermore, popular modeling software such as Blender removed native support for importing .x files in recent versions (2.8+), forcing users to rely on outdated plugins or intermediate conversion steps. The format can exist as bloated ASCII text or proprietary binary data, creating compatibility headaches across different platforms.
To modernize your assets, the best solution is conversion. For editing and animation retention, convert .x to FBX. For web-based 3D viewing, convert to GLTF or GLB. For static 3D printing or simple geometry, OBJ or STL are the most reliable targets. Our tools allow you to seamlessly bridge this gap without installing legacy SDKs.

The X Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our X converter.
