About FPE files

The .FPE extension primarily represents an FPS Entity File used by The Game Creators for their game engines, specifically FPS Creator and GameGuru. These text-based configuration files define the behavior, appearance, and logic of in-game objects (entities), such as enemy health stats, AI scripts, and texture paths. A major difficulty for developers is that .FPE files are engine-specific; they cannot be directly imported into modern engines like Unity or Unreal Engine without manual parsing. Converting them to TXT allows developers to extract logic and asset references.

However, the format suffers from a filename collision. A significant number of .FPE files are Allplan Layout Window files created by Allplan, a high-end BIM/CAD application. Unlike the game scripts, these are often binary or zlib-compressed, rendering them unreadable without a paid license. A third, less common variant is a project file from Free PDF Editor, which users often mistake for a final document. These project files hold the edit state and cannot be opened by standard viewers like Adobe Acrobat.
