About WRL files

The .WRL file extension represents a Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML) file. Initially developed in the 1990s, these files store 3D models, interactive scenes, and virtual worlds in a text-based UTF-8 format, or are occasionally compressed via GZIP. They define vertices, edges, surface colors, and textures for early 3D web environments.

While historically significant for introducing 3D to the web, the .WRL format is now severely outdated. Modern web browsers do not support it natively, requiring discontinued legacy plugins to render the scenes. Editing .WRL files is equally frustrating.
