About X3D files
The .X3D file format is an ISO-standardized, XML-based format used to store 3D computer graphics. Developed by the Web3D Consortium as the official successor to the Virtual Reality Modeling Language (VRML), it stores 3D geometry, materials, lighting, animations, and even interactivity data. You can open and edit these files using specialized tools like X3D-Edit or open-source suites like Blender. Occasionally, the .X3D extension is also used for proprietary 3D architectural design files by Avanquest or 3D game models in older MMOs like Sohu Talisman Online.
Despite being an open standard, the .X3D format has significant disadvantages in modern workflows. Because it relies on text-based XML, files become excessively bloated and slow to parse when handling high-polygon meshes. Furthermore, major game engines like Unity and Unreal Engine lack native support for it out-of-the-box, and web browsers require heavy JavaScript polyfills (like X3DOM) to render the scenes properly.
To overcome these limitations, conversion is usually required. For web deployment or AR applications, convert .X3D to GLTF or GLB for highly optimized, binary loading. If you need to edit the static mesh in standard CAD or 3D software, convert it to OBJ. For 3D printing, convert it directly to STL. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it securely right in your browser - free, online, and without installing complex 3D modeling software.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your X3D file.
If you want to convert X3D file to WRL, STEP, VRML, DAE, MAX, BLEND or MA, you can use Blender or similar software from the "XML-based 3D scene storage" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert DWG, IGES, WRL, JT, SKP or 3DM files to X3D, try Blender or another comparable tool in the "XML-based 3D scene storage" category.
The X3D Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our X3D converter.
