About VST3 files
.vst3 files are compiled Virtual Studio Technology 3 audio plugins. They are used by music producers in Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs) to add virtual instruments, synthesizers, and effects to audio tracks. Originally developed by Steinberg Media Technologies, the format is deeply integrated into software like Cubase, FL Studio, and Ableton Live. You can read more about its technical history on the Wikipedia VST page. The .vst3 format is essentially a compiled executable binary, operating like a DLL or EXE on Windows, or a component bundle on macOS. Because it contains machine-readable code rather than static audio data, you cannot directly convert a .vst3 file into an MP3 or WAV. A major disadvantage of this format is strict platform dependency; a .vst3 compiled for Windows simply will not run on macOS. Direct conversion to competing plugin architectures like AU or AAX is also impossible for end-users. Instead, users must route audio through the plugin inside their DAW and bounce the result to standard audio formats like WAV. This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because it is a closed, proprietary executable. Often only the original host software can properly read, load, or process the data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. Drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, like packaged presets or XML manifests, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your VST3 file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert VST3 file to AU, DLL, VST, AAX, SO, DYLIB, BUNDLE, PLUGIN, XPI, CRX, SAFARIEXTZ or APPEX, you can use Cubase or similar software from the "Audio Plugin Executable" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert LV2, DYLIB, VST, AAX, DRV, TDE, LADSPA, BUNDLE, AU, DLL, RTAS or SO files to VST3, try Cubase or another comparable tool in the "Audio Plugin Executable" category.
The VST3 Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VST3 converter.
