Convert NKI to another file type
To convert NKI instruments to another format, you need Kontakt or other Audio software.
Convert a file to NKI
To convert other file formats to the "Sampler Instrument Patch" file type, you need software like Kontakt or a similar tool.
About NKI files
The .NKI file is primarily a Kontakt Instrument File used by Native Instruments Kontakt. It functions as an instrument patch, storing key mapping data, velocity layers, effects settings, and custom scripting, while usually referencing external audio files like NCW or WAV. A secondary use case for the .NKI extension is the Nord Keyboard Instrument format, utilized by hardware synthesizers such as the Nord Stage 3.
Users often need to convert .NKI files because the format is highly proprietary and closed. Working with custom .NKI files requires a paid, expensive Kontakt license. If a user attempts to load an unlicensed, third-party .NKI file into the free Kontakt Player, it will abruptly time out after a 15-minute demo period. Furthermore, .NKI files cannot be natively opened by web browsers or standard audio editors, forcing users into the Native Instruments ecosystem.
When conversion is necessary, the best target formats are open sampler formats like SFZ or Logic-compatible .EXS24. Sometimes, users simply want to extract the raw audio into WAV files. However, converting an .NKI file always results in data loss. While basic key mapping and audio samples can be transferred, all custom user interfaces (GUIs), advanced effects, and proprietary Kontakt scripts (KSP) will be stripped away.
This file format is notoriously difficult to open or convert. Native Instruments tightly controls and frequently encrypts the internal architecture of modern .NKI files. Consequently, standard online audio converters fail entirely to process them. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the complex data. However, convert.guru can still identify the file format, inspect the file, and show text or internal content. Just drag and drop your file to see what it is and convert it if supported. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your NKI file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert NKI file to WAV, SF2, SFZ, EXS, KMP, VST, MP3, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA or M4A, you can use Kontakt or similar software from the "Sampler Instrument Patch Data" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert MIDI, AAC, TTA, AU, WV, DTS, MID, FLAC, RA, MP3, PCM or WAV files to NKI, try Kontakt or another comparable tool in the "Sampler Instrument Patch Data" category.
The NKI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our NKI converter.
