About VNC files

The .VNC extension serves two distinct, incompatible purposes, creating significant confusion for users. Most commonly, it is a configuration file for Virtual Network Computing software like RealVNC or TightVNC. These files act as shortcuts, storing the server IP address, port, and encoding settings in a plain text format (similar to INI). The practical friction here is that double-clicking them often launches a viewer that fails silently if the target server is offline, rather than letting you see the saved configuration. To audit these settings without launching a connection, the best workflow is converting or renaming the file to TXT.

Alternatively, in the manufacturing sector, a .VNC file is a proprietary part file created by GibbsCAM, a CNC programming system. These are binary files containing geometry, toolpaths, and machining data. The major disadvantage is that this format is completely locked to the GibbsCAM ecosystem; you cannot open it in standard CAD tools like SolidWorks or AutoCAD without a license. For these files, the goal is typically extracting usable data: convert to STEP or IGES for 3D modeling, or post-process into NC or .G-CODE for the actual machine tools.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VNC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted CNC, ENC, PDF, TST, CMI and ASO files.

The VNC Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VNC converter.
