The .aso file format is primarily used as a financial account statement by accounting platforms like Sage 50 Accounting and legacy Microsoft Money. Banks provide these files so users can import their transaction history directly into their accounting software. Additionally, the .aso extension is utilized in the scientific community to store Abstract Syntax Notation One (ASN.1) biological sequence data by NCBI GenBank, and for Raman spectroscopy material analysis data by Thermo Scientific TruScan devices.
The main disadvantage of .aso files is their extreme fragmentation and proprietary nature. A financial .aso file is essentially a black box if you do not have the specific accounting software installed. It is not supported by standard web browsers, and forcing it open in a basic text editor often yields poorly formatted data. Meanwhile, scientific and spectrometer .aso files are highly specialized binary formats that require expensive, niche software to open.
