About VMC files
The .VMC extension primarily identifies the Virtual Machine Configuration file used by the now-discontinued Microsoft Virtual PC and Virtual Server. These are text-based XML files that define the hardware environment for a virtual machine, including RAM allocation, MAC addresses, and paths to hard disk images (VHD). The main constraint with this legacy format is that modern hypervisors like Hyper-V or VMware Workstation do not natively execute .VMC files anymore. Users typically need to convert these files to view the configuration settings or manually migrate the associated VHD disks to a new virtual machine instance.
Additionally, .VMC refers to Virtual Memory Cards created by the ePSXe PlayStation emulator. Unlike the Microsoft format, these are binary container files acting as storage for game saves. A common limitation for gamers is the lack of cross-compatibility with other emulators like PCSX2. To transfer save data, users often need to convert .VMC to the raw memory card format (MCR) or the PCSX2 format (PS2).
Convert.Guru analyzes your VMC file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert VMC file to VMX, PS2, INI, CFG, CONF, CONFIG, JSON, XML, YAML, YML, TOML or ENV, you can use Windows Virtual PC or similar software from the "Virtual Machine Configuration" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….
To convert ZSHRC, CONF, RCFILE, GITCONFIG, RC, PLIST, BASHRC, CONFIG, PROFILE, INI, PREFS or CFG files to VMC, try Windows Virtual PC or another comparable tool in the "Virtual Machine Configuration" category.
The VMC Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VMC converter.
