About MEM files

The .MEM file extension serves multiple distinct purposes, creating significant confusion for users trying to access their data. The most common use (approx. 14%) is for Hioki Memory HiLogger data files. These are proprietary binary containers used by Hioki devices to store waveform and measurement data. The primary disadvantage of this format is its proprietary lock-in; users cannot simply open these files in Excel or MATLAB to analyze trends. To make this data usable for engineering reports or statistical analysis, users must convert Hioki .mem files to standard CSV or XLSX formats.

Another significant category (approx. 9%) involves System Memory Dumps or Disk Images used in digital forensics and debugging (associated with tools like Volatility or Parallels). These files contain raw snapshots of volatile RAM. They are often massive in size (gigabytes) and completely unintelligible to standard text editors. Users typically need to analyze these using specialized forensic tools or convert specific segments into raw binary or hex formats.

Legacy users may also encounter .MEM files created by Corel WordPerfect, representing old memo documents. These are obsolete and often incompatible with modern word processors like Microsoft Word. To preserve or edit these documents, conversion to DOCX, PDF, or RTF is essential.

The MEM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MEM converter.
