About VFS files

The .vfs file functions as a Virtual File System container or a Virtual FAT32 disk image. It is heavily used by Hewlett-Packard devices via the HPLIP package for Linux printer operations, as well as by numerous video game engines (including World of Tanks, Pathologic, and the Telltale Tool) to store packed game data and assets. It is also utilized by animation software like VideoScribe for video template projects. Users typically need to convert or unpack .vfs files to access the internal media assets, such as PNG textures, WAV audio tracks, or OBJ 3D models. However, the .vfs format presents extreme conversion challenges because it is a closed, proprietary format with severely fragmented internal structures. A .vfs file from an HP printer shares no technical similarities with a .vfs file extracted from a video game. Standard archive utilities usually fail to process them due to unrecognized custom compression algorithms, undocumented file tables, and encrypted headers. Extracting or converting these files usually requires specialized, community-built modding tools tailored to the specific game engine, or the exact original software used to compile them. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.

Convert.Guru analyzes your VFS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted VSF, VCF, VFS4, VFS0, PDF, VFZ, 25, IMG, AVIF, SAV, JPG, WAD and BAK files.

The VFS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VFS converter.
