About VCF files
A .vcf file primarily functions as a Virtual Contact File (vCard), a standard plain text format for electronic business cards. Less commonly, it serves as a Variant Call Format (VCF) file, a bioinformatics standard maintained by GA4GH used to store gene sequence variations from the 1000 Genomes Project. To view or manage vCard files, users typically rely on Microsoft Outlook or Apple Contacts. For genomic data, researchers use command-line software like freebayes. Despite widespread support, .vcf files present significant usability challenges. The vCard format uses a multiline, tag-based text structure that is difficult to read and impossible to natively import into most spreadsheet software or CRMs without breaking data columns. Furthermore, embedded Base64 profile pictures inflate file sizes and corrupt text editor displays. Genomic .vcf files suffer from extreme file sizes, often exceeding 100GB, crashing standard tools.
