The .VCF file format primarily functions as a vCard, the industry standard for electronic business cards. These files store contact information such as names, addresses, phone numbers, email addresses, and sometimes embedded profile photos. Secondary to this, a .VCF can also be a Variant Call Format file, which is a specialized text format used in bioinformatics to store gene sequence variations.
You can natively open contact .VCF files using Microsoft Outlook, Apple Contacts, or Google Contacts. Genomic .VCF files are handled using command-line bioinformatics tools like Freebayes or specific genome browsers.
The main disadvantage of the .VCF contact format is bulk management. Furthermore, transferring .VCF files between older legacy systems and modern smartphones frequently results in character encoding mismatches, scrambling special characters and accents.
