About VAB files
The .vab extension serves two distinct, niche communities, each with its own set of proprietary headaches.
1. Virt-A-Mate Asset Bundle (Primary)
Most commonly, this file is a resource container used by Virt-A-Mate (VaM), a hardcore adult sandbox simulation based on the Unity engine. These files package 3D models, textures (often derived from Daz 3D assets), and physics definitions into a single blob. The Problem: The format is a "black box." You cannot simply open a .vab in Photoshop to edit a texture or view a mesh in Blender. The content is locked to the specific version of the VaM software, making it difficult to inspect or reuse assets outside the game environment. The Solution: To access the contents, you typically need to "convert" the file by unpacking it. Converting the container to a standard ZIP allows you to extract the raw data, while specific internal assets should be converted to OBJ/FBX for 3D editing or PNG/JPG for image manipulation.
2. PlayStation Video Audio Binary (Secondary)
Less frequently, a .vab file is a Video Audio Binary file used in legacy Sony PlayStation (PS1/PS2) game development. It acts as a soundbank header containing instrument definitions for paired VAG audio samples. The Problem: These are archaic, hardware-specific files. Modern media players like VLC or standard DAWs cannot play them natively, rendering the audio inaccessible for listening or remixing. The Solution: For archival or creative use, these must be converted to universally supported audio formats like WAV (for lossless editing) or MP3 (for easy sharing).

The VAB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our VAB converter.
