About ACB files
ACB files primarily serve two distinct, incompatible purposes: game audio archives and professional color catalogs.
Most commonly (approx. 67%), an ACB file is a CRI Middleware Audio Container used in video game development. These archives bundle sound effects, voiceovers, and music into a single package optimized for the CRI ADX2 engine. The main limitation is that standard media players like VLC or Windows Media Player cannot recognize or play the audio streams inside. To listen to the soundtrack or use the assets in video editing, users must extract the content and convert it to standard formats like WAV or MP3.
Alternatively, in graphic design workflows (approx. 25%), the ACB extension denotes an Adobe Color Book or AutoCAD Color Book. Adobe's format is a proprietary binary file used by Adobe Photoshop, InDesign, and Illustrator to store standard color libraries (like PANTONE or FOCOLTONE). These files are strictly for internal application use and are difficult to view outside the Creative Cloud ecosystem. Designers often need to convert these color books into ASE (Adobe Swatch Exchange) for cross-app compatibility, or to JSON/CSS formats for web development. Autodesk AutoCAD also uses .acb files, though these are typically XML-based text files defining color names and RGB values, making them slightly easier to parse but still requiring conversion for use in other design tools.
Convert.Guru analyzes your ACB file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted AWB, ACO, ASE, HCA, USM, MP3, PXF, ZIP, WAV, ACP, ABC, PDF and LDB files.
The ACB Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our ACB converter.
