About UDS files

The .UDS file format serves multiple highly specialized, discontinued, or proprietary purposes. Most frequently, it functions as an Ultimate Data Structure database created by the deprecated Ultimate Family Tree software. It stores comprehensive genealogy data, including names, dates, relationships, and multimedia links. Another major use case involves scientific instrument data generated by Hitachi spectrophotometers, such as the U-2900 model. Additionally, automotive engineers encounter .UDS files as scripts for the ELRASOFT UPA-USB Programmer, often used for odometer correction, or as power supply design files for Power Integrations PI Expert.

These formats share a severe disadvantage: they are entirely proprietary, closed-source, and bound to highly specific hardware or legacy software. Genealogy researchers often struggle with .UDS files because Ultimate Family Tree is obsolete and incompatible with modern 64-bit operating systems. Scientific users face similar barriers, as Hitachi instrument data requires specific vendor software to interpret spectra and absorbance readings. Because the internal structures are closed, standard online converters fail to parse the binary data into readable formats.

For genealogy files, the ultimate conversion target is the universal GED (GEDCOM) format, which allows importing the family tree into modern software like RootsMagic or Ancestry. Instrument data ideally converts to CSV or TXT for analysis in Microsoft Excel. Direct conversion usually requires the original software to export the data properly. Standard tools cannot translate the proprietary database tables or scientific instrument metrics natively.

This file format is exceptionally difficult to open or convert because only the original software can properly read the relational tables or export the instrument data. Our analysis engine inspects the file header and internal content. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible. We can often extract plain text names from genealogy files or identify standard Microsoft Compound file structures used in PI Expert designs.

Convert.Guru analyzes your UDS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted USD, UVR, CHT, XLSX, UDF, SCN, PDF, MTF, RESOURCE and TLV files.

The UDS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UDS converter.
