About UDS files

UDS files are a prime example of data collision, where the same extension serves two completely different, highly technical industries: genealogy and laboratory science.

1. Ultimate Family Tree (Genealogy):
Most commonly, a .uds file is a project database created by Ultimate Family Tree (UFT), a genealogy program popular in the late 90s but now discontinued. These files act as proprietary containers for lineage data, media links, and family notes. The major catch here is software obsolescence. UFT does not run natively on modern Windows (10/11) or macOS, effectively locking your data inside the file. Users typically need to convert these files to GED (GEDCOM) format to migrate their ancestry data to modern platforms like Ancestry or Family Tree Maker. Without conversion, the data is essentially a binary black box.

2. Hitachi Spectrophotometer (Scientific):
In a laboratory setting, .uds files contain spectral analysis data generated by Hitachi spectrophotometers (like the U-2900). These binary files store raw measurement results not natively readable by standard office software. Scientists frequently struggle to share this data with colleagues who lack the specific UV Solutions software. The pragmatic workflow is converting this raw sensor data into CSV or XLS for analysis in Microsoft Excel or to PDF for archival reporting.

3. Other Variants:
Less frequently, you might encounter UDS files related to automotive ECU programming (ELRASOFT) or power supply design (PI Expert). These are highly specialized binary formats with almost zero cross-compatibility.

Convert.Guru analyzes your UDS file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted USD, UVR, CHT, XLSX, UDF, SCN, PDF, MTF, RESOURCE and TLV files.

The UDS Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our UDS converter.
