The .TRC file extension serves as a catch-all for 'Trace' and 'Log' data across vastly different industries, making it notoriously difficult to handle without knowing its origin. The most prevalent type (approx. 32%) is the EXFO OTDR Trace, a binary format containing optical fiber measurement data used by network technicians. These files are strictly proprietary; opening them usually requires the heavy EXFO FastReporter suite, creating a barrier for clients who simply need to view a fiber link report. Another major variation (15%) is the Microsoft SQL Server Trace, a binary log of database activity used for performance tuning, which is distinct from simple text logs and typically requires SQL Server Profiler to read.
Beyond these, .TRC files often house CAN bus automotive data (from PEAK-System), Oscilloscope waveforms (from Teledyne LeCroy), or Motion Capture data. The primary challenge users face is proprietary lock-in: an OTDR .trc file is useless to a database administrator, and an SQL .trc file cannot be opened by a text editor. This fragmentation forces users to hunt for specific viewers or pay for expensive software just to access raw data.
