About TCR files
A .TCR file is most commonly a compressed eBook originally created for the Psion Series 3, a popular PDA from the early 1990s running the EPOC16 operating system. These files use a proprietary compression algorithm designed to save precious storage space on vintage hardware, but today, this creates a significant barrier. Modern eReaders, tablets, and smartphones do not natively support the format, leaving your digital library trapped in an obsolete container. Because the format is text-only and lacks the sophisticated styling of modern equivalents, opening a .TCR file on a contemporary PC often results in garbled data unless specialized emulation software or a dedicated reader like Calibre is used.
For most users, the most practical solution is conversion. To read these files on modern devices like a Kindle or iPad, we recommend converting to EPUB or MOBI, which preserves the reflowable text structure. For archiving or printing, PDF is the standard choice.
Note for Engineers: A minority of .TCR files are Rebar Detailing Data files used by software from Applied Systems Associates (aSa). These contain distinct specifications for reinforcing steel in concrete construction. If your file is not an eBook, it is likely this proprietary CAD data, which should be converted to CSV or XLSX for use in spreadsheet applications if the original software is unavailable.

The TCR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TCR converter.
