About TCR files
The .TCR file extension is most commonly an obsolete compressed eBook format developed in the 1990s by Psion. These files store compressed text specifically formatted for reading on early 16-bit Personal Digital Assistants (PDAs) like the Psion Series 3. A secondary, highly specialized use of the .TCR extension is for proprietary rebar detailing data generated by construction engineering software from Applied Systems Associates (aSa).
Historically, users relied on the built-in TCR Reader on Psion palmtops to access these texts. Today, the open-source eBook manager Calibre remains one of the few modern, accessible programs capable of opening and extracting text from Psion .TCR archives. Conversely, aSa rebar data files require expensive, proprietary engineering CAD tools to parse and cannot be opened with standard text editors.
The .TCR eBook format is completely obsolete and heavily restricted. It supports only basic text with minimal structural formatting, relies on an outdated ZVR compression algorithm, and is natively unsupported by modern smartphones, e-readers, and web browsers. Attempting to open a Psion .TCR file directly will fail, and simple text extraction is impossible without decompressing the file first. Similarly, aSa rebar files lock your engineering data into a closed ecosystem, making cross-platform collaboration incredibly difficult.
To make your legacy Psion eBooks readable today, conversion is mandatory. For modern Apple and Android devices, convert the .TCR to EPUB. If you read on an Amazon Kindle, target AZW3 or MOBI. For long-term archiving, convert to a universal PDF or raw TXT. Because the original format lacks complex styling or images, you will not lose any visual quality during the process. Just drag and drop your file here to analyze and convert it securely right in your browser.

The TCR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TCR converter.
