An .xmt file is an XMind Template used by the XMind mind mapping software to store predefined layouts, styles, themes, and placeholder structures. These templates help users quickly start new brainstorming sessions or project maps with a consistent visual identity.
The primary disadvantage of the .xmt format is that it is a proprietary, application-specific container. Files cannot be natively opened in web browsers, mobile devices, or standard office suites like Microsoft Word. If you send an .xmt file to a client or colleague who does not pay for or install XMind, they will be completely unable to open it. This makes it a poor choice for sharing information. Standard online document converters also fail to process it because the file does not contain standard document text, but rather a complex archive of XML settings and proprietary style sheets.
