About TPI files
The .TPI file extension is a notorious source of confusion because it serves two completely different communities: content creators and gamers.
Touch Portal Icon Packs (Most Common): Approximately 25% of these files are simply ZIP archives renamed to .TPI. They contain collections of icons (PNG, JPG) and a package.json file used by Touch Portal macro decks. The "friction" here is artificial; while the software imports them easily, you cannot double-click them to view the icons on your desktop like a normal folder. To access the raw images for editing in Photoshop, you must change the extension or use a conversion tool to treat it as an archive.
Game Texture Files: A significant portion (approx. 20%) are proprietary bitmap textures used in games like Football Manager (Sports Interactive) or titles built on BioWare's Odyssey Engine. These files are optimized for GPU rendering, often lacking standard headers found in JPG or BMP files. Attempting to open these in standard viewers results in errors or "static" noise.
Conversion Advice:
For Icon Packs: Convert/Rename to ZIP to extract contents for web use or archiving.
For Game Textures: Convert to PNG or TGA (Targa) to preserve transparency and edit graphics without losing quality.
For Plugins: Some legacy .TPI files (Grass Valley Edius) are actually executables (DLL or EXE). These should generally not be converted but rather installed.

The TPI Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our TPI converter.
