Extract text from Index and backup files (TBI)
To convert TBI Index files to another format, you need SAMtools or other Data software.
To convert other file formats to the "Genomic Index File" file type, you need software like SAMtools or a similar tool.
The .TBI file extension primarily acts as a Tabix genomic data index file, utilized by bioinformatics software like SAMtools. Alternatively, .TBI files function as proprietary disk image backups created by TeraByte Image for Windows, or as renamed JPG thumbnails downloaded from the Taobao e-commerce platform.
Bioinformatics .TBI files are compressed using BGZF, a specific variant of the GZIP format. Because they contain binary block data, attempting to open them in a standard text editor results in unreadable, garbled text. Disk backup .TBI files present a different challenge: they are often massive, proprietary archives that require the exact software version that created them to restore. They are effectively locked away from modern operating systems natively.
Conversion targets depend entirely on the file's internal structure. If the file is a Taobao thumbnail, it should be converted to standard JPG or PNG formats for cross-platform support. Genomic indices generally cannot be converted to flat text without their accompanying dataset.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because web-based tools rarely support blocked GZIP streams or proprietary disk sectors. Often, only the original software can properly read or export the data. If our analysis detects a supported underlying or embedded format, viewing or conversion may still be possible.
