A .TGZ file is essentially a TAR archive that has been compressed using Gnu Zip (gzip) software, often referred to as a "tarball." While standard in Linux and Unix environments for distributing software packages and maintaining file permissions, .TGZ files present significant usability hurdles on Windows and macOS. They are not natively supported by the default Windows File Explorer, often requiring users to install third-party utilities like 7-Zip or WinRAR just to view the contents. Furthermore, because GZIP compresses the entire archive as a single block (solid compression), extracting just one file requires reading the entire archive up to that point, which can be slow for large backups. To eliminate these compatibility and access issues, users should convert .TGZ files to ZIP for universal accessibility across all operating systems, or to 7Z for superior compression ratios.
