About PAA files
The .PAA file is primarily a proprietary game texture image format used by the Real Virtuality engine, which powers Bohemia Interactive's Arma series (including Arma 3). Game developers and community modders use these files to apply visual textures to 3D vehicle models, terrain, weapons, and character uniforms within the virtual game environment.
To natively open and manage these files, users rely on specific developer software like TexView 2 (included in Arma 3 Tools) or third-party community utilities like Mikero's Tools.
Users typically need to convert .PAA files because the format is highly restrictive and heavily optimized for the game engine. The files are compressed using hardware-specific DXT1 or DXT5 algorithms and usually contain embedded mipmaps (lower-resolution copies for distant rendering). Because of this proprietary architecture, .PAA files are entirely unsupported by web browsers and standard image editors. You cannot natively open a .PAA file in Adobe Photoshop or GIMP. This creates a major bottleneck for modders who want to edit or inspect game textures quickly.
The best target formats for conversion are PNG or TGA (Targa). TGA is highly recommended for modders because it preserves alpha channels exactly as needed for the game engine's complex material shaders. Converting to JPG is possible for quick web previews, but you will instantly lose all transparency and alpha data. Note that converting to any standard 2D image format will permanently strip out the embedded mipmaps.
Because it is a closed, proprietary game asset, standard online converters usually fail to process .PAA files. They simply lack the specific Real Virtuality compression codecs required to decode the raw pixel data.
