About PKM files

The .PKM file format typically serves two completely different technical purposes in the gaming industry. Primarily, it functions as a Football Manager Match Replay file created by Sports Interactive. In mobile development, it operates as an Ericsson Texture Compression (ETC) image format developed by the Khronos Group for OpenGL graphics. Other PC titles, such as Banished and Ace Combat, use .PKM files as compressed game modification packages or raw asset archives. The major disadvantage of the .PKM format is its highly proprietary nature. Football Manager replays are not actual video files; they are dense databases of player coordinates and engine telemetry. Consequently, users cannot open them with standard media players like VLC. You must own an active, expensive installation of the game with the exact matching patch version. Similarly, ETC texture files are compressed purely for direct GPU processing, meaning standard web browsers and built-in operating system image viewers cannot render them. Standard online converters fail to process .PKM files because they lack the heavy, proprietary 3D game engines required to simulate the match data or decode specialized mobile graphics textures. If you possess an ETC texture, the best conversion targets are .PNG or .JPG for universal viewing. For match replays, you cannot directly convert a .PKM to a .MP4 video without recording your screen while the engine runs. Because this file format is deeply embedded in game architecture, it is exceptionally difficult to open or convert blindly; often, only the original game software can properly read or export the data. However, just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. convert.guru can safely inspect the file's binary header, determine if it relies on a standard underlying GZIP archive, and extract standard embedded textures or texts if supported.

Convert.Guru analyzes your PKM file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted PK9, TGA, PNG, PMK, JSON, PLIST, ZIP, ATLAS, REC, MP4, KTX, JPG and UDF files.

The PKM Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PKM converter.
