About WMP files

The .wmp extension creates a unique challenge for users because it serves three completely different functions depending on its origin. Most commonly (31%), it is a Worms Map File used by Team17 games like Worms 3D and Worms 4: Mayhem to store terrain data and spawn points. These files are proprietary binary containers that cannot be opened by standard text editors or image viewers.

However, a significant portion (~20%) of these files are legacy Windows Media Photo images. This was Microsoft's pre-release name for what became HD Photo and eventually JPEG XR (Adobe Photoshop and modern browsers may struggle to identify the obsolete .wmp extension even if they support the underlying format). Finally, architects may encounter .wmp files generated by Nemetschek Allplan, where the file acts as a CAD metafile picture.

Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our WMP converter.
