Most commonly, it functions as a game save file generated by the TyranoBuilder Visual Novel Engine, a Building Information Modeling (BIM) quantity takeoff file in Glodon Cubicost, or a Toad Automation Script used in Quest Toad database management. It is also famous in the gaming community as the input recording format for Tool-Assisted Speedruns (TAS).
Opening a .TAS file requires the exact software that created it. For instance, you need Glodon or RIB Presto for construction data, and Toad for database automation scripts. This extreme fragmentation is the primary disadvantage of the format. Users constantly face 'invalid file format' errors because a .TAS file containing Tel Aviv Stock Exchange data will completely fail to open in a BIM application.
