About SYS files
The .SYS file is a core operating system component used primarily by Microsoft Windows to store system settings, variables, and most commonly, hardware device drivers. In modern Windows architecture, these drivers are compiled in the Portable Executable (PE) format, operating at the highest privilege level (Ring 0) to allow the OS to communicate with hardware components like graphics cards and hard drives. The main disadvantage of .SYS files is their complete opacity to the end user. Because they are compiled binary executables, they cannot be opened, read, or edited in standard software. Furthermore, a single corrupted .SYS file can trigger a fatal Blue Screen of Death (BSOD), and their kernel-level access makes them a frequent target for rootkit malware. Traditional file conversion (like turning a driver into an image) is impossible. However, developers and sysadmins frequently need to extract readable data for reverse engineering or security audits. For analysis, you can extract embedded ASCII/Unicode strings to TXT or view the raw binary in Hex format to inspect the PE headers. Drag and drop your file to analyze and extract data from your .SYS file - free, online, and without installing complex reverse-engineering software.
Use Convert.Guru to open and convert your SYS file.

The SYS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SYS converter.
