About SYS files

The .SYS file is primarily a Windows system device driver or system configuration file. It provides the essential machine-level instructions that Microsoft Windows uses to communicate with hardware components like graphics cards, motherboards, and USB devices. Historically, MS-DOS also used .SYS for plain text hardware configurations, most notably config.sys. The main disadvantage of modern .SYS files is their complete opacity. They are proprietary, compiled kernel-mode executables that cannot be opened or edited by standard software. Attempting to open one in a basic text editor results in unreadable gibberish.
