About CWS files
The .CWS file extension typically represents a Creation Workshop Scene, a legacy file format used for SLA and DLP 3D printing. These files are essentially ZIP containers that bundle sliced layer images (usually PNG), a specific manifest.xml configuration file, and GCODE instructions for printers like the Wanhao Duplicator 7. While efficient for older hardware, .CWS files are problematic today because Creation Workshop is largely obsolete, having been superseded by modern slicers like Chitubox and Lychee Slicer. Users often find themselves locked out of their own print data or unable to view the 3D geometry because the file stores slices (2D rasters) rather than the original STL mesh, making reverse-engineering difficult without specific conversion tools.
A secondary but significant use of the .CWS extension is by CSoft WiseImage, a powerful hybrid CAD/raster editor. In this context, the file serves as a workspace or project file containing both vector data and scanned raster drawings. Opening these requires a specific license for WiseImage or PlanTracer, creating a barrier for users who simply need to view the schematic. For 3D printing archives, the pragmatic solution is often extracting the contents (since it is a ZIP) to retrieve the layer images, or converting the G-code for use on newer machines. For CAD users, converting to a standard DWG or PDF is essential for interoperability with software like AutoCAD or for long-term archiving.

The CWS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CWS converter.
