About CWS files
The .cws file extension is primarily a sliced 3D printer file generated by Creation Workshop Slicer, a software used to prepare 3D models for DLP and SLA resin printers. Under the hood, these files are standard .ZIP archives containing sliced image layers (usually .PNG) and XML configuration data detailing exposure times and lift speeds. Users often need to convert or extract .cws files because the original software is increasingly outdated and not supported by modern web browsers or standard OS viewers. The format is locked to specific resin printer ecosystems, making it a frustrating, closed format for general use. When converting, the most practical approach is extracting the internal .PNG image slices or the XML data to inspect the print parameters. True 3D conversion back to an .STL or .OBJ mesh is mathematically complex, requires specialized voxel-reconstruction software, and always loses the original dimensional accuracy. This file format is inherently difficult to open or convert outside of its native ecosystem. Standard online converters fail to process .cws because they do not recognize the proprietary slicing structure. Often, only the original 3D printing software can properly read or export the resin slicing data. However, just drag and drop your file to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. Because convert.guru can detect the underlying .ZIP archive structure, viewing internal content or extracting embedded images may still be possible. Secondary uses for the .cws extension include proprietary CAD drawings for CSoft WiseImage or obsolete compressed Shockwave Flash files from Adobe, both of which suffer from severe compatibility limits.

The CWS Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our CWS converter.
