About GGZ files

The .GGZ file type is primarily a Garmin Geocache Archive, a proprietary compressed format introduced by Garmin to manage massive databases of geocaches on modern handheld GPS units (like the Oregon 600 or GPSMAP 66). Unlike standard GPX files, which are plain XML text, .GGZ files act as indexed containers - essentially specialized ZIP archives - that allow devices to load hundreds of thousands of waypoints without crashing or lagging.

While highly efficient for hardware, .GGZ files are a friction point for users who want to view their data in third-party software like Google Earth or Strava, which typically do not recognize the format. Users often encounter errors when trying to upload these directly to web tools or open them in generic mapping software. To resolve this, the most practical solution is to convert the .GGZ to GPX (for broad compatibility), KML (for Google Earth), or simply treat it as a ZIP to extract the internal data.

Note: In very rare cases (approx. <1%), a .GGZ file may be a saved game state from NeptunJS, a JavaScript-based emulator. These are unrelated to GPS data.

Convert.Guru analyzes your GGZ file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.

Users also converted STATE, QGZ, SAV, DOI, FPK and NPZ files.

The GGZ Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our GGZ converter.
