About GGZ files
The .GGZ format is primarily a Garmin Geocache Archive. Engineered by Garmin, it serves as a highly optimized, indexed database container designed to let modern handheld GPS units (like the Oregon 600 series) load millions of geocaching waypoints without crashing. While highly efficient for dedicated hardware, .GGZ files are notoriously frustrating on a desktop. The format is heavily proprietary and device-bound. Standard GIS software, Google Earth, and even Garmin's own desktop application, BaseCamp, routinely reject the format. Because the format actively restricts outside compatibility, users are forced to find workarounds just to view their own map data. For true flexibility, you must convert .GGZ to universal mapping formats. The ideal conversion targets are .GPX for broad compatibility across web mapping tools, or .KML for 3D visualization. Since the .GGZ is essentially a specialized .ZIP archive containing XML files, you can also extract the internal data manually. In rare cases (under 1%), a .GGZ file might be a totally unrelated saved game state from the NeptunJS web emulator.
