About DTA files
The .DTA file extension is most commonly associated with Stata Dataset files, created and managed by the Stata statistical software suite developed by StataCorp. These files store tabular data, alongside variable labels, value labels, and internal metadata, making them the standard format for econometrics, sociology, and biostatistics research. Aside from Stata, several niche applications also use the .DTA extension for entirely different purposes, such as Austrian construction billing (ÖNORM A2063), Gamry electrochemical experiment logs, and heating controller data logs.
The main problem with Stata .DTA files is their proprietary nature and strict version incompatibility. StataCorp frequently updates the internal structure of these files. For example, if a colleague sends you a .DTA file saved in Stata 18, you cannot open it if you only have a license for Stata 13. Furthermore, Stata requires a paid, often expensive license. If you just need to view the data, calculate basic averages, or share the dataset with a client who uses Microsoft Excel or Python, the native .DTA format is a frustrating roadblock.
To make your data usable outside of the closed Stata ecosystem, conversion is required. For broad compatibility, web viewing, and simple editing, convert .DTA to CSV or XLSX. If you are archiving data or migrating to open-source environments like R, converting to Parquet or JSON provides better interoperability. Be aware that converting to plain text formats like CSV will result in the loss of proprietary metadata, such as Stata variable value mappings.

The DTA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DTA converter.
