About DTA files
The .DTA file extension primarily represents a proprietary Stata Dataset, a statistical data file format developed by StataCorp for their Stata software. Economists, researchers, and data scientists use these files to store structured datasets, complete with variable labels and formatting. However, dealing with .DTA files presents significant real-world challenges. The format is heavily proprietary and requires an expensive commercial license to open natively. Worse, Stata frequently breaks backward compatibility. A .DTA file saved in Stata 14 or 15 cannot be opened by Stata 13 without a special translation step. Furthermore, these files cannot be opened by default web browsers or standard office applications. To bypass these expensive software limits, you must convert the file. For general editing and viewing in spreadsheet software, convert .DTA to CSV or XLSX. For web development or data processing, convert to JSON or XML. For long-term archiving, plain text formats like CSV guarantee the data will remain readable for decades. Drag and drop your file to analyze and convert it - free, online, and without installing software. Note: While highly uncommon, .DTA can also act as an Austrian construction bill of quantities (ÖNORM A2063), a Gamry Instruments electrochemical experiment log, or a heating controller data log. If your statistical tools fail to parse the file, it likely belongs to one of these niche engineering applications.

The DTA Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our DTA converter.
