About SSU files
The .SSU file extension is primarily used for Satellite Receiver Firmware Updates. These files contain low-level system code designed to flash set-top box (STB) chipsets manufactured by companies like Novatek and Cheertek. A secondary, yet significant, use case is the Silvaco Software Update package, which delivers software updates for electronic design automation tools from Silvaco, Inc..
Applying a firmware update typically requires transferring the .SSU file to a USB flash drive and inserting it into the satellite receiver. The STB's internal operating system handles the flashing process. For Silvaco files, a proprietary updater utility processes the package on desktop workstations.
Users often struggle with .SSU files because they are highly proprietary, device-specific, and lack native support in standard operating systems. Firmware files are raw binaries, meaning they are strictly meant for machine execution, not human reading. Flashing the wrong .SSU file can permanently brick a hardware device. Silvaco .SSU files are actually compressed GZIP archives, which causes confusion when users try to open them directly without the correct updater software.
Because these are system updates, you generally cannot convert them to standard media or document formats like PDF or JPG. Converting firmware alters its hash and structure, rendering it useless and dangerous to the hardware. However, for the Silvaco variants, users might want to extract the internal contents to standard archive formats like ZIP or TAR.
This file format is difficult to open or convert because standard online converters fail to process raw hardware instructions or recognize custom extensions on standard archives. Our tool can inspect the file headers, show underlying text strings, and if it detects a supported embedded format - like the GZIP structure in Silvaco updates - viewing or extraction may still be possible.
Convert.Guru analyzes your SSU file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
If you want to convert SSU file to CP, CST, MP3, WAV, AAC, FLAC, OGG, WMA, M4A, AIFF, OPUS or ALAC, you can use Novatek STB Firmware or similar software from the "Firmware and Software Updates" category. In the File menu, look for Save As… or Export….

The SSU Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SSU converter.
