About MNX files

The .MNX extension acts as a container for several distinct, incompatible formats, creating a common headache for users trying to open them. Historically, it is most widely recognized as a Compiled Menu File for legacy versions of AutoCAD (pre-2006) or Visual FoxPro. In these cases, the file contains binary interface instructions - layouts, shortcuts, and commands - optimized for machine reading, not human editing. A modern but frequent variation is the POS Backup file from FN Sistemas Fenix, which is simply a renamed archive.

Users typically encounter friction when they attempt to edit an .MNX file in a text editor, only to see garbled binary code. Because it is a "compiled" state, you cannot directly modify the menu items without the original source code (Source Menu .MNU or MNS files). For AutoCAD users, the goal is often to migrate these legacy menus to the modern CUIx format. For Fenix POS users, the constraint is purely artificial; the file is a standard compressed archive disguised with a different extension.

The MNX Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our MNX converter.
