About SPA files

The .SPA file extension is most frequently associated with Spectroscopy Data files generated by Thermo Fisher Scientific (formerly Galactic) software, specifically the GRAMS/AI suite. These files store critical spectral information, including intensity values, wavelengths, and instrument parameters used in infrared (IR), Raman, or UV-Vis spectroscopy.

The Challenge: The primary disadvantage of the .SPA format is its proprietary binary structure. Unlike open formats, you cannot simply open a .SPA file in Microsoft Excel or a text editor to view the raw data. This creates a significant barrier for researchers who need to analyze data outside of the expensive and complex GRAMS environment or share findings with colleagues who lack specific software licenses.
