About TSV files

A .TSV file most commonly represents Tab-Separated Values, a simple text-based format used to store structured database or spreadsheet data. Unlike CSV files, which use commas, TSV files use tab characters to separate columns, making them the preferred choice for scientific data, bioinformatics, and software development where data fields might naturally contain commas. However, a significant minority of .TSV files are actually Transport Stream Video recordings generated by digital TV tuners, PVRs, or Android cache mechanisms (essentially renamed .TS files).

Users often struggle with text-based TSV files when attempting to open them in spreadsheet software like Microsoft Excel. Direct opening can sometimes result in misaligned columns or corrupted data types (e.g., converting ID numbers to dates) if the import wizard isn't triggered correctly. Furthermore, raw TSV text is difficult for humans to read without column alignment. For video-based TSV files, the challenge is simpler: standard media players often refuse to recognize the extension or the specific PVR encoding.
