About SPH files
A .SPH file is most commonly a NIST SPHERE (SPeech HEader REsources) audio file, a format developed by the NIST in the 1980s to store speech audio with textual metadata headers. These files are staples in academic research and speech recognition corpora (like the famous TIMIT database), but they are notoriously difficult to use today. Modern media players like Windows Media Player or iTunes cannot open them because they do not understand the ASCII header preceding the PCM audio data. To listen to the recordings or use them in modern machine learning workflows, users must convert them to standard formats like WAV or MP3. This removes the proprietary header and raw encoding friction.
Alternatively, if you are a 3D animator using MikuMikuDance (MMD), your .SPH file is likely a Sphere Map (or "spa") texture. These are essentially raster images (often BMP or PNG renamed) used to simulate shiny or reflective surfaces on 3D models. While MMD reads them natively to calculate lighting, standard image editors may not recognize the extension. Renaming or converting these to PNG or JPG allows for easier editing in tools like Adobe Photoshop. Less frequently, .SPH files may be Sciemetric InspeXion history files containing industrial quality process data.

The SPH Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our SPH converter.
