About KAR files
A .KAR file is primarily a Karaoke MIDI file, a specialized format originally developed by Tune 1000 to store musical note data alongside synchronized lyrics. Unlike standard audio files like MP3 or WAV, a .KAR file does not contain actual recorded sound or vocals; instead, it contains digital instructions that tell your computer's sound card how to synthesize the music in real-time. While this results in incredibly small file sizes, it presents significant challenges for modern users: playback quality varies wildly depending on your hardware, and most standard media players will play the audio but fail to display the scrolling lyrics. Furthermore, because .KAR files rely on older MIDI technology, they are often incompatible with mobile devices and modern web browsers without specialized software like KaraFun or VLC Media Player.
To overcome these limitations, converting your .KAR files is often necessary. For universal playback on smartphones or car stereos, convert .KAR to MP3 or WAV (this process, often called "rendering," permanently captures the synthesized audio). If you wish to preserve the visual lyric experience for a karaoke party, converting to a video format like MP4 or AVI is the best solution. For musicians wanting to edit the arrangement in a Digital Audio Workstation (DAW) like Cubase or Logic Pro, converting to standard MID is the preferred workflow.
Convert.Guru analyzes your KAR file, detects the exact format, and lets you read the text inside.
Users also converted MID, MP3, MK1, ZIP, MIDI, RAR, RTX, MP4, LYR, SNG, KRA, CDG and PDF files.
The KAR Converter Story
The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our KAR converter.
