About PCG files

A .PCG file is primarily a proprietary patch data file used by Korg Inc. synthesizers, such as the Triton, Kronos, and Pa-Series. The file stores synthesizer parameters across three categories: Programs, Combis, and Global settings. Secondary uses for the .PCG extension include enterprise mobile device management (MDM) packages for SOTI MobiControl and character sheet files for the PCGen role-playing game utility.

The critical disadvantage of a Korg .PCG file is its extreme hardware dependency. These files do not contain actual audio waveforms. Instead, they hold numerical instructions that tell a specific Korg DSP chip how to generate sound. Because it is proprietary, a .PCG file from one Korg model is often completely unreadable by another, and it cannot be opened by software digital audio workstations (DAWs) like Ableton Live or Logic Pro. Furthermore, SOTI MobiControl .PCG packages are closed deployment containers that require specific administrative software to unpack.

Users frequently attempt to convert .PCG files into audio formats like MP3 or WAV, but this is fundamentally impossible without the original hardware to synthesize the sound. However, you can sometimes convert the data into standard SYX (MIDI SysEx) or XML formats using librarian software like PCG Tools for backup purposes. For SOTI MDM files, users typically need to extract the contents to a standard ZIP archive to retrieve internal deployment scripts and APKs.

Standard online converters fail to process .PCG files because the format is a closed, undocumented binary structure mapped to specific hardware architectures. Often, only the original synthesizer or official software can properly read or export the data. Despite this, just drag and drop your file to convert.guru to identify the format, view it, and convert it when possible. We can inspect the file's raw structure, show hidden text or internal package contents, and if our analysis detects a supported embedded format, viewing or extraction may still be possible.

The PCG Converter Story

The history of Convert.Guru began over 25 years ago in California with Tom Simondi’s file-format database. A former contributor to Space Shuttle development and a software pioneer of the 1980s, Simondi established a trusted resource for file type analysis that was even referenced by Microsoft Windows XP. Today, we use modern technology to process and convert thousands of file formats while continually improving our PCG converter.
